Litigating cases for over 45 years, attorney Jim Varner of Varner & Van Volkenburg, PLLC handles cases in both state and federal courts. He has tried more than 150 cases in counties throughout West Virginia (WV), as well as in state courts in Pennsylvania (PA), Maryland (MD), Ohio (OH), and Virginia (VA) during his years of service as a WV litigation defense attorney. He is currently licensed in WV and PA, and is admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States.

A WV Attorney with Deep Involvement in Litigation Defense

Jim is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers (ACTL) and served as the chair of the WV ACTL committee for two years. He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), where he served on the National Board of Directors for six years and as the WV state chair for two years.

A member of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC), Jim previously served as a vice president and board member of that organization. He also served as the FDCC National Chairman of the Special Defense Project on Defense of Nursing Homes, and was a panel and committee member of the Punitive Damage Task Force. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Coverage Counsel.

In the past, Jim has served as a faculty member of the FDCC’s Litigation Management College. He is a member of the Litigation Counsel of America, the Council on Litigation Management, the West Virginia State Bar and the Harrison County Bar Association, where he formerly served as president. He has received the designation of Fellow of the West Virginia Bar Foundation.

A Final Note on WV Litigation Defense Attorney Jim Varner

Before beginning his extensive career as a WV litigation defense attorney, James A. Varner, Sr. received a bachelor of science degree from Fairmont State College (now Fairmont State University), a master of science degree from Arizona State University, and his juris doctorate from West Virginia University College of Law.

Jim is married to Debra Tedeschi Varner. He is the proud father of two children, James, Jr. and BreiAnne, and he is now thoroughly enjoying being a grandfather. In his time away from his role as attorney Jim Varner, he enjoys hunting, an activity that has taken him all over the world. He also spends time with his granddaughter, fishing, traveling and playing golf.
